According to glavcom.ua: The head of the Black Sea department of IRGEMO, Sergey Khutornoi, reported that the blue crab, a native inhabitant of the western part of the Atlantic Ocean, is indeed being recorded in the waters of the Black Sea, but this is not the first case. To date, more than 30 individuals have been officially confirmed along various Black Sea coasts, of which about 15 are in Ukrainian waters. Isolated findings of this species have been registered for several years, indicating its gradual, but not mass appearance.

Off the coast of Ukraine's Black Sea, scientists have recorded the appearance of a new, atypical Chesapeake blue crab for this region. The Institute of Fisheries, Marine and Oceanography Ecology of the State Agency of Fishery notes that researchers are monitoring the new marine resident. Currently, according to their data, this species does not pose a threat to the local fauna. This was reported by 'Hlavkom' citing the State Agency of Melioration and Fisheries of Ukraine.

Adaptation of the new species and research challenges

Last year, scientists recorded a female blue crab with nearly 1.5 million eggs. However, their survival in the conditions of the Black Sea, which has relatively low salinity, is limited due to the complex multi-stage development of the species. Additionally, significant natural competition for the new 'migrant' is created by indigenous crab species (green, stone, marble, and others), populations of which, according to the latest observations, are stable and widespread in the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

A recent study conducted jointly by three research institutions using modern DNA analysis methods showed that the blue crabs found in Ukraine have a genetic link to populations in Italy and the USA. This allows tracking their distribution pathways.

The appearance of the Chesapeake blue crab off the coast of Ukraine's Black Sea has piqued scientists' interest due to its unusualness in these territories. Research and analysis of the unique migration of this species may reveal much new about adaptation and evolution in the marine environment.
