The Tymoshenko Case Proceeds

According to Главком: On March 12, Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court dismissed a motion from Yulia Tymoshenko's defense team to recuse investigative judge Vitaliy Dubas. The court upheld the original case assignment, allowing Judge Dubas to remain on the proceedings. This case involves allegations that Tymoshenko offered an unlawful benefit to members of parliament. This development is a significant procedural step in a high-profile investigation that has gripped Ukrainian politics.

The investigation began on January 13 when anti-corruption agents searched the offices of the 'Batkivshchyna' (Fatherland) political party. During this search, $40,000 in U.S. currency was seized from Tymoshenko. The following day, January 14, Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) formally notified Tymoshenko of the suspicion against her. The anti-corruption authorities even published a recording of her conversation with a member of parliament.

Events Following the Initial Charges

On January 16, the High Anti-Corruption Court set bail for Tymoshenko at 33.3 million hryvnias. As part of her bail conditions, she was required to:

  • surrender her foreign passport;
  • remain within the Kyiv region without special permission;
  • refrain from communicating with specified members of parliament.

The full bail amount was posted on January 23. On January 26, the court rejected an appeal to cancel the bail but modified the conditions, permitting her to contact MPs and travel freely within Ukraine.

Subsequent events unfolded on February 16, 2026, when the Appeals Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court overturned a prior order to seize part of the assets belonging to Tymoshenko and her husband. Then, on February 26, NABU returned the funds seized during the January search to Tymoshenko, following the Appeals Chamber's decision. It is notable that the MP heard on the published audio recording is Igor Kopytin from the 'Servant of the People' party, who is himself the subject of a separate NABU criminal investigation.

The Tymoshenko case is a critical test for Ukraine's judicial and anti-corruption systems, highlighting the ongoing struggle against high-level graft. It underscores the persistent activity of Ukraine's anti-corruption bodies in pursuing investigations against influential political figures. The outcome of this case could significantly impact the domestic political landscape, reflecting broader debates about corruption and public trust in state institutions.
