Venezuela to transfer up to 50 million barrels of oil to the US: Trump and interim government agreement
Agreement between Venezuela and the US
According to Главком: US President Donald Trump announced an agreement under which Venezuela will transfer between 30 and 50 million barrels of oil currently under sanctions to the United States. This oil will be sold at market price, and all proceeds will be under the control of Trump’s administration.
It is worth noting that the oil to be transferred is subject to sanctions, complicating its realization on the international market. At the same time, the situation in Venezuela itself remains tense. The country’s leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were taken to court in New York on January 5, where they were charged with drug trafficking and terrorism. These charges were first brought in March 2020.
Political changes in Venezuela
After this, Venezuela's Vice President Delcy Rodriguez was appointed interim president of the country. The oath-taking ceremony was chaired by the speaker of parliament Jorge Rodriguez. This situation highlights the changes in the political landscape of Venezuela amid international pressure and internal problems.
Thus, the agreement to transfer oil is an important step in relations between Venezuela and the US, as well as a reflection of the change in political power in the country.
This agreement could have a significant impact on the economy of Venezuela, which is suffering from numerous economic and political crises. Attracting financial resources through oil sales, even under sanctions, can help the new leadership of the country in conditions of instability. At the same time, it underscores the intensification of international intervention in Venezuela's internal affairs and may provoke further diplomatic tensions between the US and other states that support Maduro's regime.
