Attorney Advises Military Pensioners to Seek Pension Recalculation Based on 2026 Minimum Subsistence Level
Military Pensions and the Subsistence Minimum
According to ХВИЛЯ: Attorney Tetiana Holytsia, from the law firm of Ivan Khomych, has advised military pensioners to consider filing a lawsuit to have their pensions recalculated in line with the subsistence minimum set for 2026. Under Ukrainian law, a pensioner's monetary allowance is calculated by multiplying the subsistence minimum by a tariff coefficient. Therefore, the planned increase in the subsistence minimum, as defined by the State Budget Law, will automatically raise the base figure used for these pension calculations.
The current subsistence minimum for able-bodied persons in 2023 is UAH 2,684. For 2024-2025, it is scheduled to rise to UAH 3,028. Projections indicate it will reach UAH 3,328 in 2026. This steady increase could substantially impact the final pension amount received by retired military personnel.

Variations in Potential Pension Increases
The attorney also noted that the size of the potential increase can vary significantly depending on which branch of service the pensioner served in. 'If we take the Armed Forces of Ukraine, that is one increase. If we take other authorized bodies, it could be a completely different increase,' she added. Consequently, military retirees should seriously consider the option of recalculating their pensions in light of these forthcoming legislative changes.
Given the forecasted rise in the subsistence minimum, military pensioners stand to gain a significant boost to their income. This process is a standard mechanism in Ukraine to adjust state payments to inflation and living costs. Filing for a recalculation could be a crucial step for those wishing to secure the improved financial benefits offered by the new legal framework.
