Monkeypox outbreak in Europe

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns of a monkeypox outbreak, or mpox, in Europe, where there has been a sharp increase in cases. Since August 2023, at least 46 new cases of the mutated mpox variant clade 1b have been detected in the region. This is concerning since only 29 cases of this disease were registered in Europe over the previous two years.

Characteristics of the new mpox variant

The mpox clade 1b variant, which causes more severe disease compared to other types, emerged in the Democratic Republic of Congo in late 2023. The monkeypox outbreak that began in the summer of 2022 has led to over 90,000 infections worldwide and 220 deaths. Among the new cases, at least 14 were transmitted locally, indicating local virus transmission among people with no travel history.

WHO notes that the situation has drastically changed in Europe since late August, and now we see a worrying trend. Vaccination against mpox is offered to gay and bisexual men, healthcare workers, and people who have had contact with infected individuals. Vaccination provides about 80 percent protection against the disease. WHO declared a global emergency in August 2024 due to the mpox outbreak in Africa, highlighting the seriousness of the situation on the world stage.

The monkeypox outbreak in Europe demonstrates an increasing threat to public health, especially considering the new mutated strain that may be more dangerous. Given that local transmission of the virus is becoming more common, it is important for national health authorities to take necessary measures to control the situation.

  • Vaccination and informing the population about the risks are key elements in the fight against this disease.
  • Particular attention should be paid to vulnerable groups.

The developments require close attention from the international community to prevent further spread of the virus.
