Teachers' salaries will double: when to expect changes

The draft budget for 2026 includes amendments aimed at significantly increasing salaries for teachers. The main idea is to ensure that teachers' salaries are not less than three minimum wages. According to Serhiy Babak, the head of the Education Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, a young teacher currently earns about 8,200 UAH, but after the changes, this amount could increase to 19,000 UAH. This increase has been viewed positively by MPs Serhiy Babak, Danilo Hetmantsev, and Serhiy Koleboshin. They note that the current system of allowances does not resolve the main issue - the excessively low base salary, thus the amendments aim to review the salary structure for teachers.The initiative complies with legislative requirements, particularly Article 61 of the Law of Ukraine 'On Education', which stipulates the minimum salary for educational workers. There have been similar initiatives in the past, such as Resolution No. 822 from the Groysman government, which envisioned a gradual increase in salaries to four minimum subsistence levels by 2023, but it was not implemented due to government delays. It is also noted that schools in Ukraine have moved away from Soviet traditions.
