Ukrainian President's Statement on Hungary

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has outlined the conditions for cooperation with Hungary's future leadership following the parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine's readiness to work with any individual in Hungary who seeks peaceful relations with Ukraine and does not obstruct its geopolitical alignment.

"We are prepared to work with any Hungarian government, with any person in Hungary, who desires to work and live in peace with Ukraine, who will not block our geopolitical choice, and who will be a good neighbor. We are ready to cooperate in a friendly manner, provided that person is not an ally of Putin, specifically the aggressor state,"

The Political Landscape in Hungary

According to a recent poll, the opposition party 'Tisza' is supported by 53% of decided voters, making it the leading political force among respondents. Meanwhile, the 'Fidesz' party, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, is ready to be supported by 39% of those surveyed.

  • The opposition force leads the ruling party by 14 percentage points.
  • This represents a significant shift in the country's political landscape.
  • For Viktor Orbán, these elections could become the most serious political challenge he has faced in the last 16 years.

Furthermore, Zelenskyy expressed concern about the potential influence of Russian political technologists on Hungary's electoral process. He stated that 'Russian political technologists are engaged in this. They are present on Hungarian territory and are assisting the current government in the election process.' It is noted that the consulting agency Social Design Agency, which has ties to the Kremlin, developed a disinformation campaign in support of Orbán aimed at discrediting his main political rival, Péter Márki-Zay.

Consequently, the Hungarian elections could substantially impact relations between Ukraine and Hungary, with the April 12 voting results being decisive for future cooperation between the neighboring states. Hungary's geopolitical position is particularly sensitive due to its membership in both the European Union and NATO. Given the importance of geopolitical ties in the context of current challenges, Hungary's new government will play a key role in shaping future policy towards Ukraine, which could affect regional stability and security.
