12th-Century Manuscripts Reveal Unprecedented Sermons by Augustine of Hippo
Newly Authenticated Sermons Attributed to Augustine of Hippo
According to НВ — Техно: Researchers have discovered and verified the authenticity of previously unknown sermons by Augustine of Hippo, dating back to the 12th century. These Latin texts, preserved in a manuscript, focus on the biblical episode of King Saul and the Witch of Endor, with their publication scheduled for late 2026. Augustine, a prominent theologian and bishop of Hippo, lived from 354 to 430 AD, and his works have profoundly shaped Christian doctrine.
The Latin texts were uncovered in a manuscript originally belonging to the German abbey of Bad Doberan. The discovery was made by Professor Christian Tornau of the University of Würzburg and Dr. Clemens Weidmann. An international congress held in Vienna, attended by twenty leading Latin scholars, confirmed the authenticity of these writings. It has been determined that the recovered sermons are genuine addresses by Augustine of Hippo, who lived from 354 to 430 AD.
Content and Significance of the Sermons
The discovered sermons deal with King Saul's visit to the Witch of Endor and the appearance of the spirit of the prophet Samuel. Notably, Augustine delivered the first part of the sermon on a Sunday and continued his arguments the following Wednesday. Interestingly, the Pelplin manuscript is a copy of a text once housed at the Amelungsborn Abbey in Lower Saxony. However, the original library of that abbey was burned during the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century.
Currently, researchers are finalizing the first critical edition of these found sermons. This unique work promises to become a key resource for studying Augustine's literary legacy and his influence on Christian thought. The publication, anticipated for late 2026, has already generated significant interest among scholars and historians.
