Barcelona to Hold New Presidential Election as Joan Laporta Steps Down
Laporta Submits Resignation
According to Главком: FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has formally resigned from his position. This procedural move is required for him to stand as a candidate in the upcoming club presidential election, which has been scheduled for March 15. The entire board of directors has also stepped down alongside Laporta.
A Legacy of Trophies and Influence
Joan Laporta first became president of Barcelona in 2003, serving until 2010, before returning to the role in 2021. His tenure has been one of the most successful in the club's modern history. Under his leadership, Barcelona secured:
- six Spanish league titles,
- two Champions League trophies,
- and a host of other domestic and international cups.
The formal dismissal documents for the executives were filed on Monday. Barcelona is more than just its famed men's football team; its structure includes a women's football team, as well as professional futsal, basketball, handball, roller hockey, and ice hockey sections. The club's men's team has also progressed to the Champions League round of 16 this season. The final for the 2025/26 Champions League season is set to be held in Budapest, and the new official match ball for the final is planned for introduction starting from this current round of 16 stage.
Laporta's departure marks a pivotal moment for the Catalan giant. The upcoming election will be crucial in setting the club's future strategic direction, particularly as it navigates ongoing financial pressures and aims to remain competitive at the highest level. With the team still active in European competition, the new president's influence could be felt immediately in squad planning and key sporting decisions.
