First Meeting of the Working Group

According to Главком: On December 26, the first meeting of the special working group for preparing legislative proposals regarding the organization of elections and referendums during martial law and in the post-war period will take place. The meeting is scheduled for 13:00 and will last about two hours. The working group already includes about 60 people, among whom are representatives of all parliamentary factions and groups - two individuals from each.

The Composition of the Working Group and Its Goals

A significant role in the group's work is played by members of the Central Election Commission (CEC), which includes five members headed by the chairperson. Also, by position, the deputy chair of the relevant committee, Alina Zahoruyko, joined the group. The Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, signed an order to create the working group, highlighting the importance of this issue for the country in wartime.

Olexandr Korniienko, one of the group members, noted:

'Tomorrow at 13:00, the first online meeting of the working group on preparing elections and referendums during martial law and in the post-war period is scheduled.'

He also reported that CEC members will prepare a review presentation addressing all the issues arising in elections during martial law and during post-war elections. Among other group participants, the following can be highlighted:

  • Olena Shuliak, head of the committee on state power,
  • Olexandr Zavitnevych, head of the committee on national security,
  • Olena Kondratiuk, deputy head of the Verkhovna Rada.

The working group meeting aims to develop effective legislative initiatives that will help organize the electoral process in conditions when the country is experiencing difficult times.

This initiative indicates the Ukrainian authorities' desire to ensure democratic processes even in extraordinary conditions dictated by martial law. Research and discussions on issues that may arise during elections in this period are crucial for maintaining stability and government legitimacy. Adopting the relevant legislative changes could be an important step towards restoring normal political life in the country after the end of the war.
