Vegetable Market Shifts: Onion Prices Drop 19% as Tomato Costs Climb
Onion Prices See Significant Drop
According to Главком: Prices for onions in Ukraine have continued to fall, with the cost now ranging from 3 to 8 hryvnias (approximately $0.07 to $0.18) per kilogram. This marks an average price decrease of 19% compared to the start of the previous work week. Furthermore, current onion prices are a substantial 49% lower than they were during the same period last year. These price movements are typical for this time of year as new harvests begin to reach the market.
Early Vegetable Harvest Begins
In the village of Zarichchia, Zakarpattia Oblast, farmers have actively begun gathering early-season vegetables. Early varieties of radish, which mature in 25-28 days, are now available for sale. During the winter, this maturation period can extend to 70-80 days. Current radish prices are between 105 and 120 hryvnias per kilogram, equating to roughly 25 to 27 hryvnias per bunch.
Additionally, the harvest of early cabbage is scheduled to start in mid-April. It is expected that a single greenhouse could yield up to seven tons of cabbage. Meanwhile, the greenhouse tomato market is experiencing a sharp price increase. By the end of last week, tomatoes were selling for 120-140 hryvnias per kilogram, representing a rise of approximately 10%.
Consequently, the Ukrainian vegetable market is undergoing significant pricing changes, which may impact consumer demand and the overall state of the agricultural sector.
The decline in onion prices in Ukraine may indicate a market surplus, a common occurrence as new harvests commence. Simultaneously, the rise in greenhouse tomato prices could be linked to seasonal fluctuations and shifts in agronomic conditions. Monitoring these trends is important, as they can influence consumer budgets and the broader economic stability of the agricultural sector.
