YASNO Explains the Surprising Rise in Power Bills During Blackouts
Why Electricity Bills Increase Despite Power Outages
According to ХВИЛЯ: Energy supplier YASNO has clarified why electricity bills can be higher even when regular blackouts occur. The primary reasons involve specific consumption patterns and the mechanics of how household appliances operate, particularly the initial surge of power, or inrush current, required to start them up.
When power is restored, the motors in refrigerators, pumps, and other appliances can draw 3 to 7 times more energy at startup than during normal operation. This surge contributes to a higher total energy consumption. Furthermore, concentrated electricity use during the hours when power is available creates peak loads on the grid, which also impacts the final amounts on utility bills.
The Impact of Winter Frost and Personal Habits
The winter frosts currently affecting Ukraine further complicate the situation, as active use of electric heaters and heating systems increases overall electricity consumption. The final bill amount can also be influenced by individual consumption habits and potential meter malfunctions.
Serhiy Kovalenko from YASNO states: 'The increase in the bill is not a paradox of 'no light - pay more,' but a result of frosts, concentrated consumption during supply hours, and individual behavior.'
Experts advise consumers to monitor their meter readings carefully and avoid turning on all high-energy appliances simultaneously. This helps reduce strain on the grid and control electricity costs.
Understanding how electricity bills are calculated is especially crucial for consumers during Ukraine's ongoing energy crisis. This context of frequent, scheduled blackouts makes energy efficiency more important than ever. The rise in bills during outages underscores the need for greater public awareness about energy efficiency and rational electricity use. Therefore, specialists recommend adapting consumption habits to current conditions, which may help lessen the financial burden during this difficult period.
