NATO Under Scrutiny

According to Главком: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has raised serious doubts about the value of NATO after several allies refused to allow the United States to use their military installations for strikes against Iran. Spain was among the nations that declined Washington’s request for base access, a decision Rubio argued undermines the very reason the alliance exists. This criticism comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran, and reflects growing frustration within the Trump administration over allied cooperation during military operations.

'So when NATO partners deny you the use of those bases-when the main reason NATO is beneficial to America is now being refused by, for example, Spain-then what is the point of the alliance?' Marco Rubio

Rubio also noted that Portugal, unlike Spain, agreed to allow base usage even before the U.S. formally made a request. He highlighted other countries that offered support to the United States:

  • Poland
  • Romania
  • Bulgaria
'It’s starting to feel like they’re allies when it suits them.' Marco Rubio

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has compiled a list of NATO members that failed to provide adequate support to Washington during the Iran conflict. The White House is now considering a reassessment of military cooperation with certain allies. Rubio concluded: 'What is the purpose of being in an alliance whose benefit to us comes from these basing rights, if in a time of conflict-like the one we had with Iran-they can deny us access to those bases? So why are we there? Only to defend them, and not to advance our own national interests? That’s a very fair question, and one we need to answer.'

Rubio’s remarks underscore rising concerns in American political circles about NATO’s effectiveness in addressing contemporary geopolitical challenges. The refusal by some nations to provide military bases may signal shifting attitudes among allies regarding shared defense commitments within the alliance. This development could reshape U.S. relations with European partners and prompt a broader review of international security cooperation strategies.

As tensions escalate, the U.S. is contemplating potential sanctions against NATO allies that are reluctant to support military efforts in Iran. This consideration reflects a growing rift within the alliance, as highlighted by Rubio's concerns over the utility of NATO when key partners fail to provide necessary assistance during conflicts.
