The EES System's Launch in the Schengen Area

According to ХВИЛЯ: Starting in 2026, the Schengen Area will implement the Entry/Exit System (EES), replacing traditional passport stamps with a digital biometric registration. The system is scheduled to be fully operational by April 10, 2026. The biometric procedure will involve fingerprint scanning for individuals over 12 years old, facial photography, and the recording of passport data. Information collected in the EES will be stored for a period of three years.

Key Details of the New System

A critical aspect of the new rules is that refusing to provide personal data for the EES will result in an immediate ban on entry to EU countries. The system will cover 29 countries, including all EU member states except Ireland and Cyprus, plus Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. However, the EES will not apply to holders of long-term visas, residence permits, or citizens of EU member states.

In a related development ahead of the 2026 changes, Poland has revised its consular service fees starting January 2026. The cost for a Polish national visa has increased from €135 to €200. The price hike also affects passport issuance and notarial services at Polish consular offices. These adjustments reflect a broader trend of countries adapting to the new requirements and systems being introduced by European institutions.

The introduction of the EES marks a significant step in modernizing European border control, aiming to enhance security while streamlining the crossing process for travelers. This modernization is part of a wider EU effort to digitize and secure its external borders. The changes in consular fees, such as those in Poland, may influence tourist flows and business relations, as increased costs could deter some potential travelers.
