EU Approves Final Phase-Out of Russian Gas Imports by 2027
The EU's Strategy to End Reliance on Russian Gas
According to ХВИЛЯ: On January 26, the European Union formally adopted a strategy to completely halt all imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027. This landmark decision was passed by a qualified majority, overcoming resistance from some member states, notably Hungary and Slovakia. The approved legislation sets out critical timelines and enforcement mechanisms.
The plan mandates that the EU will cease imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) by the end of 2026, and stop pipeline gas imports by September 30, 2027. The import ban will take effect six weeks after the law is published. However, a provision allows for a potential delay of the ban until November 1, 2027, in the event of critical circumstances. Both individuals and companies found violating the new rules will face financial penalties.
Broad Support for the Measure
The decision was backed by 72% of EU member states, representing 65% of the bloc's population. This demonstrates substantial political will among members to reduce dependency on Russian energy resources. This move is a direct consequence of Russia's war in Ukraine, which has forced Europe to rapidly reconfigure its energy security.
The EU's abandonment of Russian gas marks a pivotal shift in its efforts to achieve energy independence from Russia. This strategy is poised to reshape Europe's energy landscape, compelling member states to accelerate the search for alternative suppliers and develop domestic energy projects. Successful implementation will require significant coordination between nations and adaptation to new market realities.
