The European Union introduces a penalty points system: what awaits Ukrainian drivers
New Traffic Control Systems in Europe
In 2025, new traffic control systems are being introduced in Europe, based on accumulating penalty points. This innovation involves the revocation of driving licenses for systematic violations, complicating the adaptation of Ukrainian drivers who plan to travel or live in European Union countries.
Rules for Accumulating Penalty Points
According to the new rules:
- Germany: the limit for penalty points is 8 points. Drivers who accumulate this number of points due to violations may lose their driving license. It is important to note that the penalty points system in Germany is linked to insurance payments, which further increases the responsibility of drivers.
- France: an experienced driver has 12 points, while a beginner only has 6. With systematic violations, this credit of trust can quickly diminish. After the implementation of the penalty points system in France, traffic accidents decreased by almost 20%, indicating the effectiveness of the innovation.
- Italy: drivers start with 20 points, and there is a bonus system that allows reducing the number of points for accident-free driving. However, in the case of serious violations, sanctions can be quite severe.
- Poland: for novices, the limit is 20 points, while experienced drivers have 24 points. Speeding in Poland by 50 km/h is punished with 15 points, which is a strict penalty.
Thus, the new penalty points system in European Union countries creates additional challenges for Ukrainian drivers who must consider these rules while driving. Adapting to the new conditions may require significant effort, as the principles of traffic rule enforcement differ significantly from those in Ukraine.
The introduction of the new penalty points system in European Union countries aims to enhance road safety and reduce traffic accidents.
Ukrainian drivers should pay attention to these changes, as they may affect their mobility and daily life in Europe. Knowing and adhering to the new rules may become a key factor in avoiding serious consequences related to the loss of driving rights.
