Finland Affirms Ukraine's Right to Self-Defense, Declines to Condemn Attacks on Russian Oil
Regional Tensions Continue
According to Главком: Finland's Foreign Ministry has not demanded that Ukraine cease its strikes against Russian oil infrastructure, despite the fallout from downed drones on Finnish territory. Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen emphasized Ukraine's inherent right to self-defense, stating:
“We are not making any demands on Ukraine regarding which targets it seeks to influence in Russia.” - Elina Valtonen
Valtonen further clarified: “Finland is not asking for anything like that. But, of course, we must ensure that Finns are not put in danger.” This stance comes as NATO members on Russia's border remain vigilant to potential spillover from the conflict.
Drone Incidents in the Baltics and Black Sea Region
Separately, on March 30, the Latvian National Armed Forces detected an unidentified drone near its border with Russia in the Ludza and Balvi districts. Authorities confirmed the drone did not violate Latvian airspace. In a related incident, Romania confirmed that a Russian drone breached its airspace on the night of March 26. The aircraft penetrated approximately 4 kilometers into Romanian territory before crashing. Romania's Ministry of National Defence reported recovering drone fragments, suggesting the UAV was likely damaged or diverted by Ukrainian air defenses while protecting ports in the Odesa region.
These drone events in Latvia and Romania underscore the heightened regional tensions and lend context to Finland's statements on Ukraine's defensive actions. The incidents highlight how the war's effects are being felt beyond Ukraine's immediate borders, testing the security of neighboring NATO states.
In light of these developments, Ukraine's government has expressed regret to its Baltic neighbors regarding the recent drone incidents, attributing the mishaps to Russian jamming. This response highlights the complex dynamics at play in the region, as neighboring countries navigate the implications of the ongoing conflict.
