Lviv's Main Christmas Tree Dismantled, with Trunk for Heat and Branches for Animal Feed
Lviv's Festive Tree Comes Down
According to Главком: The primary New Year's tree in Lviv, which stood in front of the city's opera house, has been taken down after 50 days. The tree's trunk will be used to heat the premises of the municipal enterprise 'Green Lviv,' while its branches have been delivered to the 'Home for Rescued Animals' shelter to serve as feed for hoofed animals. This sustainable approach is part of a growing trend in Ukrainian cities to repurpose holiday trees.
Putting the Tree to Practical Use
Andriy Shulskyi, deputy director of 'Green Lviv,' stated that the trunk will be used for the enterprise's own heating needs. He also noted that the tree remained standing longer than usual due to the frosty weather this season.
The branches have become a vital food source for the shelter's animals. Orest Zalipskyi, head of the 'Home for Rescued Animals,' reported that their facility cares for over 150 goats that enjoy eating pine needles in winter. He explained that coniferous branches are important for feeding, as animals lack access to greenery in winter and need the needles for vitamins. The tree was originally donated to the city by a family from the village of Sokilnyky.
The dismantling of Lviv's holiday tree highlights the city's responsible environmental stance. By using the trunk for heating and the branches for animal feed, the process underscores the importance of recycling and the rational use of resources. This is particularly relevant in winter when animals require extra nourishment. The cooperation between municipal enterprises and animal shelters demonstrates social responsibility and support for Lviv's local ecosystem.
