Analyst George Friedman Forecasts a Post-Russian World Order Following Ukraine War
George Friedman's Forecast for 2026
According to ХВИЛЯ: George Friedman, founder of Stratfor and Geopolitical Futures, has released his annual forecast for 2026, arguing that Russia's failure to achieve victory in Ukraine marks the end of the Cold War era. His central thesis is that the Russian military's inability to conquer Ukraine demonstrates that Russia is no longer a global power. Friedman predicts the new world order will be shaped primarily by the relationship between the United States and China, where a negotiated agreement is expected.
Friedman emphasized that the conflict in Ukraine became a pivotal moment when Russian forces failed to occupy the entire country, were repelled from Kyiv, and now struggle to hold only a fraction of Ukrainian territory.
"For me, the Cold War ended in Ukraine," he stated.
He added that this proves Russia is incapable of invading Europe, which was the primary fear during the Cold War. Friedman also noted that if Russia cannot seize even half of Ukraine, it cannot project meaningful power into other regions.
Geopolitical Shifts and Economic Challenges
Friedman's forecast, titled 'A World in Search of a New Anchor,' is available on geopoliticalfutures.com. In a podcast recorded ahead of former U.S. President Donald Trump's speech in Davos, Friedman expressed concern over Trump's actions, including threats of tariffs against countries opposing the purchase of Greenland. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently reviewing the legality of imposing such tariffs without Congressional approval. Trump's approval rating stands at approximately 40%, with disapproval at 57%.
Friedman also commented on China's economic state, noting that its growth rate has fallen below 5%, and the country faces significant unemployment and financial system issues. He highlighted that the U.S. economy constitutes 25% of the global economy.
"Russia doesn't even look like a major regional power," he remarked.
In the modern world, Russia cannot compete with the U.S. or China. Friedman believes 2026 will see rising political tension in the United States, linked to growing resistance to Trump.
George Friedman's forecast underscores a significant shift in the global balance of power, particularly the diminished influence of Russia on the world stage. This analysis provides a stark reassessment of Russia's military and geopolitical standing following its invasion. These changes could have major implications for future international relations, especially within the context of U.S.-China rivalry. According to Friedman, the situation in Ukraine has acted as a catalyst for these shifts, pointing to a new phase of global politics where the roles of major powers and their ability to project influence are fundamentally changing.
