Kyiv Postpones Fare Hike to 30 Hryvnias Amid Approval Delays
Kyiv Delays Public Transport Fare Increase to 30 Hryvnias
According to Главком: Kyiv's municipal authorities have yet to finalize a date for implementing higher public transport fares. The new single-trip price is set at 30 hryvnias, but its rollout has been postponed due to ongoing approval procedures. Originally, the updated pricing was scheduled to take effect on July 15.
According to officials, the new fare is based on the actual operational costs of transport companies for the year 2025. The Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) stated:
“The new fare remains set at 30 hryvnias per trip – this price is economically justified and calculated using 2025 cost data.”
The KCSA also noted that the fare calculation accounts for real 2025 expenses, including projected price indices, updated labor costs, energy and fuel expenses, and other components of transportation service costs.
Economic Rationale Behind the Tariffs
It is worth noting that the economically justified fare for the metro in 2026 would be 64.60 hryvnias, while for buses, trams, trolleybuses, and the funicular it would be 44.14 hryvnias. The city administration has also rejected a petition urging it not to raise the fare to 30 hryvnias.
Once the new tariffs are introduced, a monthly pass covering both municipal ground transport and the metro will rank fourth among similar passes in European capitals. Only London, Amsterdam, and Stockholm will have more expensive monthly passes.
Kyiv authorities plan to announce the fare increase once the approval process is complete. The KCSA said:
“After the document is signed, it will be published in accordance with established procedures on Kyiv’s official portal, and the decision will also be communicated via official information channels and the city government’s social media.”
As a result, residents of Kyiv are still awaiting an official announcement regarding the implementation date for the new public transport fares. That date will remain uncertain until all approval procedures are finished.
The proposed fare increase is a significant issue for Kyiv residents, as it will directly affect many households' daily budgets. City officials justify the higher rates as necessary to cover the rising costs of providing transport services, reflecting growing expenses for maintaining urban transit. Once officially announced, the new fares are expected to spark public debate, which could influence future decisions by the authorities.
In light of these fare adjustments, it's essential to stay informed about other changes affecting public transport in the city.
