Stepan the Lynx in Pictures
According to Главком: Kyiv Zoo has released new photos of a lynx named Stepan, who has noticeably gained weight over the winter. The images were taken in the zoo's orchard, where Stepan appears completely at ease. One visitor humorously remarked that the lynx seems to have discovered life's true purpose:
“Judging by Stepan's gaze, he has found his meaning in life. As for the gym, you can go yourselves,” said Olya Bogatko.
Visitors have also been charmed by Stepan's appearance, sharing their amusement:
- “He's clearly raiding your refrigerators at night!” – Tetiana Alekseeva.
- “I'm going to stand by his enclosure. I understand him so well...” – Svitlana Hryn.
- “He looks like a pampered house cat spoiled with treats” – Irinka Vorobei.
These comments highlight how the animals spark positive emotions in everyone who sees them.
A Far Eastern Leopard Cub
In other news, the zoo has announced the birth of a black-colored Far Eastern leopard cub. This subspecies, also known as the Amur leopard, is one of the world's rarest, with only about a hundred individuals estimated to remain in the wild. The cub, named Hera, was born in August 2025 to parents Salma and Hercules, a pair of Amur leopards at the facility. The black coloration is caused by recessive genes, making the cub exceptionally unique. Zoos play a critical role in global conservation efforts for endangered species, and this birth represents a significant achievement for Kyiv Zoo's breeding program.
Kyiv Zoo continues to delight visitors with its successes in preserving rare animal species. The birth of the Far Eastern leopard is a major accomplishment, given the subspecies' critically low numbers. The joy these animals bring to the public also underscores the importance of zoos as educational and recreational centers for society.
In addition to Stepan's charming antics, the zoo recently celebrated the arrival of a rare black Amur leopard cub. This unique addition, known as Hera, showcases the zoo's ongoing commitment to conservation.
