Former Russian Footballer Mogilevets Details Portugal Residency Struggle: A Year and a Half Wait for Permit
Pavel Mogilevets's Experience Living in Portugal
According to Главком: Former footballer Pavel Mogilevets has discussed the challenges of his life in Portugal, where he faces significant difficulties, particularly in obtaining a permanent residency permit. Mogilevets, who played for FC Zenit and the Russian national team, has been waiting for this document for a year and a half, severely limiting his ability to travel. He played four matches for Russia between 2014 and 2018 and was part of the national squad for the 2014 World Cup.
Mogilevets described the Portuguese bureaucratic process as lengthy and complex.
"Anyone who has ever lived in Portugal and dealt with paperwork knows it's a very long process. I've been waiting for a residency card for a year and a half so I can travel. I've been here the entire time,"
he noted. Regarding the language barrier, the former athlete added that while he speaks English well, he still encounters difficulties in daily life, especially when dealing with government agencies and writing various letters.
"In every country, something as simple as paying a water bill is done differently. It's just another way of doing things, and you have to get used to it,"
Mogilevets added. Navigating foreign bureaucracy is a common hurdle for many athletes who move abroad after their playing careers.
The Situation with Alexandra Sautina
Meanwhile, Russian speed skater Alexandra Sautina, recognized as a neutral athlete by the International Skating Union (ISU), was present at Russian President Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly on February 29, 2024. Her attendance at the event has caused controversy, as it appears to violate International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines for neutral athletes. Also present at the event were Putin's allies and Russian military personnel involved in the war against Ukraine. Cross-country skier Veronika Stepanova published a photo showing Sautina at the event, further highlighting her participation. This incident underscores the ongoing tension between international sports bodies and Russian athletes regarding political neutrality.
Both cases illustrate the complex challenges faced by athletes and their families amid political and social tensions. Mogilevets describes administrative hurdles that are common for many immigrants in Portugal, while Sautina's presence at a state event calls into question the neutrality of athletes in the context of Russia's international isolation. These events could influence the global perception of Russian athletes and emphasize the importance of adhering to international norms and recommendations in sports.
