Historical Documents Handed Over to Ukraine

According to Главком: Ukraine has received a collection of historical documents originally from its territory, covering the late 19th to mid-20th century, in a transfer carried out by Latvia's National Archives. The handover was led by the institution's director, Mara Sprudza, while Anatolii Khromov, head of the State Archival Service of Ukraine, accepted the materials. These records are closely tied to the histories of Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Odesa, and Volyn regions. This repatriation underscores ongoing efforts to reclaim cultural heritage displaced during the turmoil of the 20th century.

What the Transferred Documents Contain

The returned archive includes a wide range of items that shed light on the historical development of Ukrainian lands. Among them are:

• parish registers and reports from religious communities;
• certificates and reports reflecting social life of the period;
• blueprints for a prayer house and other technical records;
• documentation from Evangelical Lutheran congregations, local schools, and German settlements.

Large-scale relocation of archival collections occurred during and after World War II due to Soviet evacuations, Nazi confiscations, and postwar transport.

“After studying the documents' provenance, Latvian experts concluded they are part of Ukraine's documentary heritage and must be returned. The decision to transfer them was made in line with international principles of cultural heritage preservation and archival cooperation,” the Ministry of Justice stated.

This document transfer marks a significant step in restoring Ukraine's historical memory and cultural legacy.
