Ice Phenomena on Ukraine's Water Bodies

According to Главком: Due to falling air temperatures, Ukraine's Hydrometeorological Center has reported the formation of various ice phenomena across the country's water bodies. Understanding these distinct stages of the ice regime is crucial for assessing the condition of rivers and lakes.

Stages of the Ice Regime

  • Grease Ice ("Salo"): A thin film or patches of ice forming on the water's surface.
  • Slush ("Snizhura"): A viscous mass of water and snow that forms after precipitation falls onto open water.
  • Ice Rind ("Zaberehy"): Strips of ice frozen fast along the shoreline.
  • Partial Ice Cover ("Nepovnyy lodostav"): Ice that covers only a portion of a water body.
  • Polynyas ("Opolonky"): Areas of open water within an ice cover, caused by water movement or temperature fluctuations.
  • Frazil Ice ("Shuha"): Subsurface ice that rises to the surface or is carried by the current.
  • Ice Jam ("Zazhor"): An accumulation of frazil ice and ice floes in a river channel, which can partially block the flow and cause water levels to rise.

Forecasts indicate that warming and above-freezing temperatures are expected from January 26th onward.

This information is vital for anglers, navigation, and other waterway users, as knowledge of ice phenomena can help prevent accidents and ensure safety. These specific terms are part of the specialized vocabulary used by meteorologists and hydrologists in the region.

The predicted warming suggests that ice conditions are likely to change, a factor that should be considered when planning any activities on or near the water.
