Nurse at Children's Home Faces Charges After 9-Year-Old's Death from Neglect
Ukraine Confronts Cases of Medical Negligence
According to Главком: A nurse at the Mahalskyi Children's Home-Internat in Chernivtsi Oblast has been formally notified of suspicion regarding the negligent performance of her professional duties, which resulted in the death of a 9-year-old child. According to the regional prosecutor's office, the child required immediate medical assistance, but the necessary measures were not taken, leading to a rapid deterioration in her condition. 'The child's condition sharply worsened due to the untimely response, and it was not possible to save her,' the prosecutor's office stated. This case highlights ongoing concerns about the welfare of vulnerable children in state care institutions.
The nurse is suspected under Part 2 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This statute carries a potential penalty of restriction of liberty for up to five years or imprisonment for up to three years. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances, as each instance of professional negligence by healthcare workers warrants a serious review of the child welfare and healthcare systems.
Other Recent Tragic Incidents
Separately, other tragic incidents involving children have been reported in Ukraine. In Lutsk, a two-year-old boy died under circumstances unrelated to illness or an accident. Reports indicate that 'the two-year-old boy did not die from a disease or an accident. Instead of child nutrition, he was allowed to drink alcohol.' The child's father permitted him to consume alcohol in place of food, which caused the tragedy. The boy lived in a low-income family, underscoring how poverty can contribute to such devastating outcomes.
In a related international case, on January 30, 2026, Polish prosecutors charged a Ukrainian man with the murder of a 24-year-old woman. The Ukrainian citizen was detained the day before, and the teenager's cause of death was determined to be suffocation. These cases collectively point to severe social challenges faced by children and families both within Ukraine and among its citizens abroad.
These tragedies signal an urgent need for improvements in Ukraine's healthcare and social protection systems. Instances of professional negligence by medical staff and the threats arising from poverty and social vulnerability demand an immediate response from the state. Thorough investigations into such incidents could serve as a critical step toward preventing similar tragedies in the future.
