MÉLNIK’s Take on the Financial Realities of the Music Industry

According to РБК-Україна — Lite: Ukrainian singer MÉLNIK (Vladyslav Melnyk) has opened up about the financial landscape of the music business, insisting he is far from a millionaire and that rumors of massive performance fees are often exaggerated. He explained that to live comfortably, he needs to perform 15 to 20 shows per month, and any money he earns is immediately reinvested into his craft. Recently, Melnyk launched his solo career and released his debut single, 'Mona Lisa.'

First Corporate Gig and the Demands on Modern Artists

Reflecting on his career, the singer revealed that his first corporate event paid just $200.

“It’s almost laughable to talk about huge fees. I dislike artists who boast about their success while riding the subway and living from one release to the next. I’m nowhere near being a millionaire,” he stressed.

According to Melnyk, he doesn’t even know what money looks like because it 'comes in and goes right back out.'

Melnyk also highlighted that today’s artist is no longer just a singer.

“These days, an artist isn’t only a performer. You have to be a marketer, a scriptwriter, an editor, a blogger, a concert organizer, an accountant, and even your own therapist,” he said.

A successful career now involves a variety of responsibilities, including:

• festival appearances
• TV projects
• competitions

“I think to live comfortably, you need about 15 to 20 concerts a month. I’m still working toward that,” Melnyk noted.

Notably, he also serves as a festival director under his legal name, Vladyslav Melnyk. He admits that sometimes his music career feels like a side project to his festival work. The ongoing full-scale war in Ukraine has further strained the industry’s financial situation. Despite these challenges, the artist continues to develop his projects and aims to reach new heights in his career.
