A bug in Windows 11 that caused a file called CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal to balloon in size has been addressed by Microsoft. This file, part of the background Capability Access Manager process, could grow to between 60 and 200 GB, creating serious storage issues for users-especially those with SSDs of 256 GB or less. The fix was delivered through the optional June update labeled KB5095093.

The patch was published on July 2 at 7:00 PM. According to reports, the CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal file reached 60–100 GB on many machines, with one Reddit user recording a maximum size of 200 GB. This problem affected system performance and available storage significantly.

Why This Update Matters

Currently in testing, the KB5095093 patch is described by Microsoft as 'an update that improves how the CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal file uses disk space.' By applying this fix, users can prevent similar disk space issues from recurring in the future.

Resolving this bug marks an important step for Microsoft in ensuring the stability and efficiency of Windows 11. Given that the file’s unchecked growth could severely impact system performance-particularly on devices with limited storage-this update helps users maintain smoother operation. It also highlights the value of keeping software up to date for optimal system health.
