ICRC Delegation Summoned

According to ХВИЛЯ: The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation to explain a recent statement from the committee. The ICRC's declaration, which condemned 'recent strikes on critical infrastructure in Ukraine and Russia,' placed attacks on Ukrainian cities and the Russian city of Belgorod on the same level, provoking outrage from Ukrainian diplomats. This incident highlights the intense scrutiny of language used by international bodies regarding the war.

Ukraine's Response

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called the statement shameful, arguing that such remarks deepen the organization's reputational crisis.

"A false moral equivalence between the aggressor and the defending country is unacceptable," stated Dmytro Kuleba.

He emphasized that, unlike Russia, Ukraine acts within the framework of international humanitarian law and possesses an inherent right to self-defense.

In his comments, Kuleba invited the authors of the statement to spend a day in Ukraine to better understand the situation.

"I also invite the people who wrote and approved this statement to leave their warm offices, come to Ukraine, and spend a day in a cold shelter. Perhaps a sense of reality will return to them," said Dmytro Kuleba.

The cities mentioned in the ICRC statement, which suffered strikes, include:

  • Kyiv
  • Dnipro
  • Donetsk
  • Belgorod

This situation marks a significant moment in Ukraine's relations with international humanitarian organizations like the ICRC. It underscores the sensitivity of framing the conflict and the necessity for precise wording, which can impact an organization's reputation. Ukraine's stance on international humanitarian law and self-defense remains a critical topic within the context of the ongoing war, and comments from Ukrainian officials may influence future interactions with international partners.
