Незвичайні трюфелі в Україні: чому їх збір може призвести лише до символічного покарання.

Types of Truffles in Ukrainian Forests

Scientists in Ukraine have discovered several types of truffles, including summer and winter varieties. The summer truffle, which used to grow in oak and beech forests in the western part of the country and in Crimea, is now very rare and included in the Red Book of Ukraine. The winter truffle is also widespread in western regions, but it is not yet a protected species, although it is also rare.

In the case of collecting 'red-listed' mushrooms, fines are imposed; however, proving the fact that these specific types of mushrooms were collected can be difficult. Maria Shevchenko noted that fines for violations range from 17 to 51 hryvnias for citizens and from 425 to 850 hryvnias for collecting in protected areas.

The amount of the fine is negligible – from 17 to 51 UAH for citizens, for collecting mushrooms in protected natural areas – from 425 to 850 UAH. However, it is challenging to document such violations and prove in court that this person collected these specific mushrooms. Imagine, someone from concerned citizens called the police, but the police are unlikely to understand the types of mushrooms from the Red Book. Unfortunately, our system for tracking and punishing the collection of mushrooms and plants from the Red Book is not regulated.

Mycologist Tips

Regarding mushroom consumption by children, Maria Shevchenko explained that restrictions in this regard do not only affect children but also people with gastrointestinal issues, pregnant women, and the elderly. The specialist reminded that chitin in mushrooms is safe for humans as it is excreted from the body almost unchanged.

The Ministry of Health does not recommend mushrooms for children under 12 years old, for people with gastrointestinal disorders, pregnant women, and the elderly. Indeed, a person does not have an enzyme that digests chitin, and this does not depend on age. In fact, chitin is not a problem – it is an inert substance that is excreted from the body in almost the same form in which it was consumed.

Encouraging news for mushroom lovers: scientists in Ukraine have discovered several interesting types of truffles in the forests. Summer and winter truffles are very rare species but can still be found in western regions. However, remember that collecting red-listed mushrooms may lead to fines, so it’s better to learn about the types of mushrooms that can be collected without harming nature.
