How Population Growth Is Reshaping the Planet: A New Scientific Analysis

According to НВ — Техно: A new study published in Environmental Research Letters reveals that Earth’s population has already exceeded the threshold considered safe for the planet. Conducted by researchers from Flinders University’s Global Ecology Lab (Australia), along with experts from Stanford, Cambridge, and the University of California, the analysis draws on 200 years of historical demographic data. The findings point to a critical turning point in population growth that occurred in the mid-20th century.

Until the 1950s, population growth went hand in hand with technological progress and rising energy consumption. But starting in the 1960s, a negative demographic phase began. Today, the global population stands at 8.3 billion, while scientists estimate that a truly sustainable number would be around 2.5 billion. Looking ahead, the population is projected to peak at between 11.7 and 12.4 billion by the late 2060s or early 2070s.

Ecological Consequences of a Growing Population

The study draws a direct link between population increases and rising global temperatures, higher carbon emissions, and a growing ecological footprint. Among the major risks tied to this growth, researchers highlight:

  • biodiversity loss;
  • freshwater shortages;
  • food supply instability;
  • deepening social inequality.
'Humanity’s current existence on this scale is only possible because of the massive use of fossil fuels and the depletion of natural resources at a rate faster than they can be replenished.' – Professor Corey Bradshaw

To stabilize demographic growth, the researchers argue for a fundamental rethinking of land and energy use, as well as a reduction in consumption levels. The study was supported by the Australian Institute of Child Research and the organization Population Matters.

The research underscores the critical situation humanity now faces, having crossed the planet’s safe population limits. With continued growth expected in the coming decades, it is essential that governments and societies take action to promote sustainable development, shrink the ecological footprint, and protect natural resources. This issue must become a top priority for global efforts aimed at preserving the planet for future generations.

As our planet faces unprecedented challenges due to overpopulation, experts warn that significant demographic shifts may be on the horizon. A recent study indicates that the global population could potentially decline dramatically by 2064 as climate crises intensify. Understanding these interconnected issues is crucial for grasping the full implications of our current trajectory.
