New Banknote Release

According to Главком: The National Bank of Ukraine has announced the upcoming issuance of a 2000 hryvnia banknote featuring the portrait of Ukrainian poet Vasyl Stus. Set to enter circulation on September 4, 2026, the new bill has already triggered a flurry of memes and humorous suggestions on social media, including the playful nickname 'stusany' for the denomination.

According to official details, the front side of the note will display Stus’s image. It is worth noting that among all modern Ukrainian paper banknotes, only one currently features a woman-Lesya Ukrainka on the 200 hryvnia bill. In the history of Ukrainian currency, a 1 million karbovanets note was introduced in 1995, which later became equivalent to 10 hryvnia after the hryvnia’s adoption in September 1996. The exchange rate at the time was 100,000 karbovanets for 1 hryvnia.

Debate Over Potential Portraits

Among the figures proposed for future banknotes, the following have been discussed:

  • Les Podervyanskyi
  • Timur Mindich
  • Princess Olga
  • Stepan Bandera
  • Leonid Kuchma

Timur Mindich, a key figure in the anti-corruption case known as 'Midas,' has also become a target of jokes on social media, with his phrase 'Dvushechka na Moskvu' sparking widespread commentary.

Additionally, social media users have suggested dedicating the next 5000 hryvnia banknote to Stepan Bandera. These proposals reflect the lively public discourse surrounding new banknotes and their historical significance among Ukrainians.

The release of this new banknote represents a significant step in recognizing Ukraine’s cultural heritage and its prominent figures. Vasyl Stus, as a symbol of the struggle for human rights and freedom of speech, may help raise public awareness of his contributions to literature and national identity. The ongoing discussions about other potential banknote portraits also mirror current socio-political dynamics in Ukraine, highlighting the role of historical figures in shaping the modern Ukrainian state.

The introduction of the new 2000 hryvnia banknote not only celebrates Vasyl Stus's literary legacy but also ignites discussions about future banknote designs. With various personalities being considered for upcoming releases, the conversation around potential new banknotes reflects the dynamic intersection of culture and currency in Ukraine. This ongoing debate underscores the importance of recognizing historical figures in shaping national identity.
