Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation

According to Главком: The German Football Association (DFB) has asked Julian Nagelsmann to step down as head coach of the German national team following the squad’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32. Should he leave, Nagelsmann will receive a severance payment of €7 million.

On Thursday, the coach met with association officials in Frankfurt for a three-hour discussion. During the meeting, DFB executives gave Nagelsmann the chance to present his analysis of Die Mannschaft’s performance at the tournament. It was at this point that they suggested he consider resigning. Nagelsmann currently leads the team under a contract that runs through mid-2028.

Germany’s elimination

Germany was knocked out of the 2026 World Cup after losing to Paraguay in a penalty shootout (3–4) following a 1–1 draw in regular time. According to German outlet Bild, the DFB wants Nagelsmann to leave with his head held high.

Notably, Ecuador’s national team also found itself without a head coach after the World Cup, as Sebastián Beccacece resigned following a 2–0 loss to Mexico, ending his two-year tenure with the squad.

Nagelsmann’s departure may serve as a pivotal step in restoring the reputation of the German national team, which has faced deep disappointment on the international stage. The DFB, now looking for a new coach, could turn to globally renowned specialists to improve the team’s performance in future tournaments. This situation also highlights the instability of coaching positions in national teams, as World Cup defeats often trigger sweeping leadership changes. As such, developments in Germany may reflect a broader trend in global football, where quick reactions to tournament results are common.

The recent changes in the German national team coaching staff reflect a larger trend in international football. Following the World Cup exit, Manuel Neuer's retirement from the national team adds another layer of uncertainty as the DFB seeks to rebuild. The departure of key figures often signals a fresh start, and fans will be keen to see how these shifts impact Germany's future performance on the global stage.
