Canonization of Metropolitan Yevheniy Hakman
According to Главком: On May 11, 2026, the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine officially recognized Metropolitan Yevheniy Hakman as a saint. Hakman, who served as Archbishop of Chernivtsi and Metropolitan of Bukovina and Dalmatia, is a pivotal figure in the region's history. His canonization marks the conclusion of an extensive review process, which began with the documentation of testimonies in 1891 and was further supported by the discovery of his incorrupt remains in 1914.
Investigation Process and Public Service
The inquiry into Hakman's potential sainthood started as early as 1891, when a special church commission recorded numerous accounts of healing and assistance attributed to prayers directed at the metropolitan. These testimonies laid the groundwork for deeper examination of his life and work. In 1914, during the opening of his tomb, a commission officially verified that his remains were incorrupt-a key factor in the recognition of his holiness.
Hakman was also known for his active civic engagement. In 1851, he proposed the establishment of a theological faculty in Chernivtsi to the Austrian government. The Bukovina Regional Diet began its sessions in April 1861, where Hakman served as a deputy for three years. From April 5, 1861, to 1864, he held the position of Marshal, and in 1862, he became a member of the House of Lords in the Imperial Council (Reichsrat).
According to the press service of the Chernivtsi-Bukovina Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, 'Yevheniy Hakman is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Bukovina. He was a spiritual leader, an enlightener, a defender of the Orthodox faith, and he served the people and the church for many years.'
In this way, the canonization of Metropolitan Yevheniy Hakman represents a significant step in acknowledging his contributions to spirituality and education in the region.
The recognition of Metropolitan Yevheniy Hakman as a saint is a milestone for both the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the community of Bukovina, underscoring the importance of the spiritual legacy and educational efforts of this outstanding figure. This canonization may inspire further research into church history and Hakman's impact on regional development, while also strengthening religious life in Ukraine.
