Danish PM Warns EU: Internal Divisions Empower Russia and Risk a U.S. Trade War
Concerns Over EU Fragmentation
According to Главком: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has expressed deep concern that potential fractures within the European Union could strengthen Russia's position and leave Europe more vulnerable to external pressure. She stressed that European unity is the 'only way forward' for the bloc, emphasizing the critical need for solidarity in the face of global challenges. This warning comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.
Potential Consequences of a Trade War
According to current plans, the United States could impose new tariffs of 10% starting February 1, 2024, with a potential increase to 25% on June 1. Mette Frederiksen noted that if a trade war begins, Europe must be prepared to respond.
'The main thing is to be prepared if a trade war starts on February 1. But if the U.S. starts a trade war, Europe must respond,' she stated.
Discussing the potential fallout, the Prime Minister indicated that such a conflict would negatively impact not only the European economy but the American one as well. 'I hope a trade war never becomes reality, because it will hit our economy and, for that matter, the American economy too,' she added.
For context, EU pharmaceutical exports to the U.S. totaled €84.4 billion in the first three quarters of 2024.
Frederiksen further warned that if Europe begins to fracture seriously, it would become far too easy for Russia, which poses a direct threat to the continent, to inflict damage. In this context, she underscored the importance of unity among EU nations, including:
- Great Britain
- Denmark
- Norway
- Sweden
- France
- Germany
- Netherlands
- Finland
An extraordinary EU summit scheduled for January 22 will address these issues. Participants aim to find ways to strengthen unity and counter external pressure. The Danish Prime Minister called for a collective effort to avoid potential economic conflicts that could threaten regional stability.
