Attacks on Civilian Infrastructure in Ukraine

According to Главком: A Russian FPV drone struck a civilian vehicle in Mykolaivka, Donetsk region, killing three workers from the Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant. Another individual was wounded in the same attack. Emergency services quickly extinguished the fire that erupted in the vehicle following the impact.

Separately, overnight on February 17, Russian forces launched an assault on Odesa, damaging infrastructure and civilian buildings and leaving two people injured. The Russian military also targeted the city's energy infrastructure during this attack.

In a further escalation, Russian forces attacked Dnipro with ballistic missiles. A woman was killed in the Sumy region as a result of these strikes; rescue workers recovered her body from the rubble of a destroyed house. Rescue and repair operations are currently ongoing in multiple regions across the country.

Statements from Ukrainian Officials

First Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Artem Nekrasov, commented on the event: 'In the morning, a Russian UAV attacked a vehicle carrying workers of the Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant. Unfortunately, three of them were killed. This is another reminder of the high price we pay for the light and heat in our homes. Sincere condolences to all who have lost family and loved ones!'
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the 'combined strike was specifically calculated to inflict maximum damage to the energy sector.'

These incidents underscore the intensifying violence in Ukraine, where attacks on civilian objects and infrastructure have become commonplace in the ongoing conflict. They highlight the critical importance of energy infrastructure for sustaining civilian life and the severe consequences such strikes have for ordinary citizens. In the context of war, each loss of life resonates deeply and emphasizes the urgent need for security, both for energy sector workers and the entire population of the country. The targeting of energy facilities is a consistent tactic in Russia's campaign, aiming to cripple Ukraine's power grid during the winter months.
