The Netherlands has transferred a mine countermeasure vessel to Ukraine: how this will change the situation in the Black Sea
Ukraine has been handed a modern Alkmaar-class mine countermeasure vessel, capable of conducting operations to clear the Black Sea of mines. This was reported by the spokesman of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Captain 2nd Rank Dmytro Pletenchuk.
This means real capability for us to de-mine our waters. The mine contamination is massive, and we are still facing the consequences not only of the current war but also of the First and Second World Wars in the Black Sea. Therefore, there is more than enough work to be done, and the need for such vessels is immense.
The new vessel is a fully functional mine countermeasure ship with powerful capabilities, capable of independently detecting mine threats and conducting demining at various depths. These ships have successfully operated in the Atlantic Ocean, so their capabilities will be sufficient for the Black Sea.
The representative of the Naval Forces of Ukraine stressed that operations for demining are already being carried out, but on a smaller scale than necessary. These actions help protect the grain corridor and ensure the safety of navigation.
It is planned that a full-scale demining operation will be possible after the security situation improves and it becomes feasible to bring ships directly into the Black Sea. The demining process may take between three to five years.
