Two-Day US-China Summit Concludes in Beijing

According to Главком: Despite concluding without any formal agreements, the two-day summit between American and Chinese leaders in Beijing yielded several important understandings. Chinese President Xi Jinping has accepted an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to visit the United States in the fall. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the meeting as historic, emphasizing that the two heads of state engaged in deep discussions and achieved meaningful outcomes.

Key Understandings and Market Reactions

The two sides resolved issues related to agricultural market access and agreed to expand trade under conditions of mutual tariff reductions. Washington and Beijing also decided to establish joint trade and investment councils. However, financial markets responded negatively to the summit:

  • U.S. stock markets declined;
  • Oil futures rose due to the lack of clear agreements on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Beijing called for dialogue on disputes involving Iran, expressing hope for a swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz following a ceasefire. Wang Yi stressed that China and the United States are ready to maintain communication and play a constructive role in promoting a political resolution to the crisis in Ukraine. In this context, China hopes for a rapid end to the war in Ukraine.

Taiwan was also a topic of discussion at the summit. Trump made no commitments regarding Taiwan, while considering the possibility of lifting sanctions against Chinese companies that purchase Iranian oil. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin plans to visit Beijing on May 20, with the Kremlin characterizing the trip as a routine engagement.

Donald Trump: 'I am not making any promises one way or the other.'

The announcement of Xi Jinping’s invitation to the White House for May 15, 2026, was made during a state banquet in Beijing on May 14.

Although no concrete agreements were signed, the summit underscores the importance of dialogue between the U.S. and China amid global economic and political challenges. The establishment of new trade and investment councils may signal both countries’ desire for cooperation despite existing tensions. Additionally, the Taiwan issue and the situation in Ukraine remain key factors that could shape the future trajectory of bilateral relations.

As the discussions unfolded, the atmosphere was notably punctuated by cultural exchanges, including a lavish banquet for Trump, featuring traditional Peking duck. This event not only highlighted the diplomatic efforts but also set the stage for future interactions between the two leaders.
