A Ghost Fish Caught in Croatia: A Sturgeon Thought to Be Extinct
According to glavcom.ua: A fisherman on the Danube in Croatia unexpectedly caught an extremely rare sturgeon. This species, which was believed to be extinct in Ukraine and locally extinct in the Danube basin, was caught in the 'Mura-Drava-Danube' biosphere reserve. The fish, measuring 1.76 meters in length and weighing 35 kg, was returned to the water alive to help in the recovery of the population of this species.
Experts note that the appearance of the sturgeon indicates that the river has natural conditions for sturgeons and emphasizes the importance of preserving rivers and migration routes for the recovery of species on the brink of extinction.
Sturgeons, which have existed on Earth for over 200 million years, currently face numerous threats such as dam construction, destruction of spawning grounds, and poaching. Restoring populations of these fish will require joint efforts and attention to the conservation of river ecosystems.
The news of the sturgeon caught on the Danube in Croatia indicates the possibility of preserving rare fish species through the protection of natural habitats and active restoration of river ecosystems. The hope for the reconstruction of sturgeon populations will now depend on conservation efforts and restoring natural conditions for these species.
