Diesel Fuel Supplies to Ukraine Cut Off

According to Главком: Slovakia and Hungary have halted diesel fuel exports to Ukraine. This decision follows the shutdown of the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline, a critical energy conduit, after Russian attacks targeted Ukrainian infrastructure. In response, the Slovakian government will release 250,000 tons of oil from its strategic reserves to mitigate potential shortages. This disruption highlights the ongoing impact of the war on regional energy logistics.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico confirmed that the company Slovnaft has ceased all diesel exports to Ukraine, alongside other export activities. All fuel refined in Slovakia will now be reserved exclusively for its domestic market. Similarly, Hungary has also stopped diesel shipments to Ukraine and stated it will not resume them until the Druzhba pipeline is operational again.

Hungary possesses strategic oil reserves estimated to last approximately 96 days. In a related development, Croatia refused a request from Hungary and Slovakia to permit the transit of Russian oil via the Adria pipeline. Croatian Economy Minister Ante Šušnjar noted that European Union countries no longer have a technical justification for remaining dependent on Russian energy resources.

Implications for Ukraine's Energy Security

The suspension of diesel supplies from Slovakia and Hungary poses a serious threat to Ukraine's energy security. This is particularly acute given the ongoing conflict and instability in the global oil market. The loss of these neighboring suppliers could lead to greater instability in Ukraine's energy sector, which would inevitably impact the country's broader economic situation.

This development underscores Ukraine's heightened vulnerability during the war and its reliance on imported energy. As European nations work to reduce their dependence on Russian resources, Ukraine may need to urgently explore alternative pathways to secure its future energy needs.
