The Impact of Human Activity on Oceans Will Double by 2050: What Awaits the Planet
According to glavcom.ua: A new study by scientists from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) shows that the cumulative impact of human activity on oceans will double by 2050. This poses devastating consequences for marine ecosystems and human societies. This is reported by 'Glaive' citing the scientific journal The Current.
Oceans, which have been considered limitless and impervious to external threats for centuries, are now on the brink of danger. According to marine ecologist and director of the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) Ben Halpern, the increase in pressure is happening very quickly.
«Our cumulative impact on oceans, which is already significant, will double by 2050 – in just 25 years. This includes ocean warming, loss of fish biomass, rising sea levels, acidification, and nutrient pollution, among other effects», – stated Ben Halpern, who led the research on forecasting the future state of the marine environment. – This is alarming. And it is unexpectedly not because the impact will intensify – this is not surprising – but because it will grow so significantly and so rapidly».
Researchers predict that the biggest impact on the state of oceans will come from global warming and the loss of fish resources due to intense fishing. The fastest changes are expected in tropical and polar regions, as well as in coastal areas, where most human activity is concentrated.
The increase in stress may exceed the ability of ecosystems to recover, which, in turn, will create serious challenges for humanity, especially for countries whose economies heavily depend on the ocean.
However, as noted by the authors of the study published in the journal Science, the future can still be changed. They emphasize the importance of implementing policies to reduce climate change and strengthen fisheries management.
«The ability to look into the future is an extremely powerful planning tool, – said Halpern. – We can still change this future; our article is a warning, not a sentence».
From the study by scientists, it becomes clear that humans are already significantly impacting the oceans, but the risk of further exacerbation of the situation is increasing. There are ways to change the course of events, but this requires decisive steps in ecology and economics, as well as increased public and governmental awareness of the problem of our impact on the marine environment.
