The USA and Russia voted against the Ukrainian UN resolution on Chernobyl
Voting at the UN General Assembly on the Chernobyl disaster
According to ХВИЛЯ: The USA, along with Russia, voted against the Ukrainian initiative at the UN General Assembly regarding the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. The General Assembly approved a resolution on international cooperation in this area, which was supported by 97 countries. 39 countries participated in the vote, which abstained from voting, as well as several states that spoke against it, including Belarus, China, North Korea, Nicaragua, and Niger.
Main provisions of the resolution
The main provisions of the resolution confirm the long-term nature of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. The text of the document affirms the use of the Ukrainian spelling 'Chornobyl.' The resolution also expresses concern over damage to the new confinement that occurred on February 14, 2025. A special session of the General Assembly is scheduled for April 24, 2026.
The representative of the American delegation noted that voting against does not mean a change in approach to Ukraine's nuclear safety issues. It indicates a continuation of dialogue and discussion on important issues related to nuclear safety and the consequences of Chernobyl.
The voting at the UN General Assembly underscores the complexity of international relations in the context of nuclear safety, where the positions of countries may differ even on issues of global scale, such as the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. The support of the resolution by the majority of countries indicates the recognition of the seriousness of the problem and the need for international cooperation. However, the opposition of certain states, including the USA and Russia, may affect future efforts in this area.
