Court Extends Ex-Minister Galushchenko's Detention and Lowers Bail
Case Involving Herman Galushchenko
According to Главком: Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court has extended the pretrial detention of former Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko by two months while reducing his bail from 200 million hryvnias to 150 million hryvnias. The decision came after a partial approval of a motion filed by a detective from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU). This case highlights ongoing anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine, particularly targeting high-ranking officials.
Galushchenko was detained by NABU detectives on February 15, 2026, as he attempted to leave Ukraine. He faces charges of money laundering and involvement in a criminal organization. On February 17, the anti-corruption court imposed a preventive measure of custody with a bail set at 200 million hryvnias. Subsequently, on March 2, the Appeals Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court upheld his detention.
Arrest Circumstances
Galushchenko has remained in custody since his arrest. As of February 26, he was held in a standard cell without improved conditions, sharing it with three other inmates. In a comment, he stated:
“This bail amount effectively forces me to stay in a pretrial detention facility with no chance of paying it.”
The court's ruling and the ongoing situation surrounding Galushchenko continue to draw significant public and media attention.
The Galushchenko case is a key element in the broader fight against corruption in Ukraine. His arrest and subsequent judicial decisions reflect a stepped-up effort by anti-corruption agencies to curb illicit activities at the highest levels of government. As public scrutiny of such cases intensifies, they can substantially influence trust in state institutions.
