Geographic Naming Rules Updated

According to Главком: Sweden has formally revised its guidelines for writing Ukrainian place names in Swedish-language communications. Government agencies and diplomatic missions will now use Kyjiv/Kyiv instead of Kiev, Odesa instead of Odessa, and Donbas instead of Donbass. The change marks a departure from earlier spellings that had been shaped by Russian linguistic conventions. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed gratitude to Sweden for adopting this important update.

Monday Movement in Sweden

Alongside the naming rule changes, the Monday Movement in Sweden deserves attention. This grassroots initiative began in March 1990 to support Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in their push for independence from the Soviet Union. Weekly gatherings at Norrmalmstorg resumed on February 28, 2022, this time to show solidarity with Ukraine amid Russia’s full-scale invasion. Gunnar Hökmark, the sole surviving original organizer, has taken the lead in reviving these demonstrations.

Maria Malmer Stenergard noted: 'Names are not just words. They carry history, identity, and a people’s right to self-determination.'

This revision of geographic naming rules represents a meaningful step toward recognizing Ukraine’s distinct identity and respecting its cultural heritage. Decisions like these can help strengthen ties between Ukraine and allied nations that back its sovereignty. Meanwhile, the Monday Movement in Sweden reflects enduring solidarity with Ukraine, underscoring support for the country’s independence and territorial integrity amid ongoing challenges. Together, these developments highlight the importance of international backing in the global struggle for identity and self-determination.
