Warm Beijing Summit Between Trump and Xi Sidesteps Core Disagreements
Trump-Xi Summit in Beijing: A Cordial Meeting with Unresolved Tensions
According to ХВИЛЯ: The recent summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing ended on a friendly note, but deliberately avoided addressing the most contentious issues in U.S.-China relations, including Taiwan, trade dumping, and human rights. Orville Schell, an expert who has tracked U.S. presidential visits to Beijing since 1979, analyzed the May 15 meeting, noting that while the two leaders connected on a personal level, they failed to tackle fundamental problems. Schell pointed out that Trump and Xi sidestepped nearly every issue at the heart of bilateral tensions.
Key Topics of the Summit
During the summit, Xi Jinping raised the Taiwan issue before formal talks began, even as the U.S. Congress prepares $25 billion in arms packages for Taiwan. Schell remarked that
“they’ve once again kicked the can down the road,”
adding that
“it’s easy to say, but what it actually means remains unclear.”
He also noted that neither side has concrete plans for serious concessions, and that “Xi could surprise us, but he seems to lack the gene for giving a little to get a little-the very essence of diplomacy.”
Pragmatic agreements were reached at the summit. China committed to purchasing billions of dollars worth of soybeans and 200 Boeing aircraft. Trump also brought a delegation of tech leaders, including Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, who joined Air Force One as far as Anchorage. Trump reported that Xi pledged to do everything possible to assist with the Strait of Hormuz situation.
Orville Schell highlighted China’s leverage, such as rare earth metals and critical minerals, as well as U.S. leverage, including microchips and semiconductor manufacturing technology. Beijing previously rejected the idea of guardrails in competition but now accepts them. Schell also recalled Mao Zedong’s words during Nixon’s visit:
“It’s fine if we can’t solve this issue for a hundred years,”
and Deng Xiaoping’s comment before his 1979 trip to Washington:
“Let’s leave it to smarter generations.”
Contentious topics left off the summit agenda include:
- Taiwan
- Dumping
- Intellectual property theft
- Human rights
Schell noted that “each gave the other plenty of face, which truly smoothed things over” during the meeting. Meanwhile, visions of imperial grandeur for Russia and China persist, with calls to restore maximum historical borders, including Tibet, Manchuria, Mongolia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the South China Sea.
The Trump-Xi meeting underscores the complexity of U.S.-China relations, which remain strained by numerous unresolved issues. Despite economic deals that could boost bilateral trade, major political disputes linger in the background, signaling a prolonged conflict between the two nations. Going forward, it is crucial to monitor developments, as without progress on key issues like Taiwan and human rights, stability in the relationship may remain at risk.
