Trump Stripped of Diplomatic Leverage: Iran Talks Hit a Dead End
The Void in U.S.-Iran Diplomacy
According to ХВИЛЯ: According to American strategist Peter Zeihan, the Trump administration’s personnel policies have left the United States and Iran without any meaningful diplomatic engagement. He argues that negotiations stalled after the firing of seasoned professionals from the State Department, CIA, Pentagon, and National Security Council. As a result, Washington’s diplomatic efforts have proven largely ineffective.
Personnel Shifts and Their Fallout
Three individuals were assigned to the Iran portfolio: Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. However, Vance was removed from the team after a single failed visit. Washington handed Tehran a one-page memorandum, which was then stretched into a two-week evaluation process. Zeihan noted that
“it’s one page. Because that’s roughly the attention span Donald Trump has.”
Additionally, the Trump administration launched Operation Project Freedom, intended to have the U.S. Navy escort commercial vessels through the Persian Gulf. Yet the operation was canceled just two days after Saudi Arabia demanded its termination and a return to negotiations with Iran through Pakistani intermediaries. Only two ships were escorted under this initiative.
Over the course of a year and a half, the Trump administration failed to secure any substantial trade agreements with any country, while relations with allies deteriorated to their worst point in decades. Zeihan emphasized that
“Trump’s problem is that most of these people have been fired, and those who remain effectively have no authority to conduct diplomacy, because Trump considers it his personal prerogative.”
He added that “he claims the title of the dumbest man in America and never returns to the White House with anything useful, only the other side’s propaganda.”
Preparations are currently underway for an upcoming summit with Xi Jinping, where American top executives have been invited for the first time. However, there is a risk that this summit will repeat the same preparation issues seen previously, potentially leading to new difficulties in U.S. foreign policy.
