Turkish company Besiktas Shipping ceases operations with Russia after attack on tanker Mersin
Ceasing operations of Besiktas Shipping
The Turkish company Besiktas Shipping has announced the cessation of all operations with Russian interests following the incident with the tanker Mersin off the coast of Senegal. This decision resulted from events that occurred on November 27, 2025, when the tanker Mersin suffered significant damage as a result of four explosions. The vessel was anchoring near Dakar at that moment.
It is noted that Besiktas Shipping has a fleet of 29 tankers, but after the attacks that occurred on November 26, 2025, the company decided to reassess its ties with Russia. On that day, Ukrainian naval drones attacked two tankers, including the tanker Kairos and the tanker Virat, which sustained critical damage.
International sanctions and consequences
Additionally, it is worth noting that in response to these events, the European Union is preparing the 19th sanctions package, which will increase the 'blacklist' of vessels to 568 units. The USA has already imposed restrictions on over 180 tankers, while Canada has taken action against 100 vessels. As of early 2025, the 'shadow fleet' of Russia numbered about 940 vessels.
Thus, the actions of Besiktas Shipping reflect the growing pressure and consequences of the international situation surrounding Russian interests in maritime transportation. The company's refusal to cooperate with Russian entities indicates serious risks related to safety and the economy faced by transport companies in light of recent attacks and increasing sanctions. This may lead to further changes in global shipping routes and impact pricing policies in the transportation sector.
