Kyiv's 'Spring Blossom' Environmental Protection Operation

According to Главком: The annual 'Spring Blossom' environmental protection campaign has commenced in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv. Its goal is to safeguard early-blooming plants, including snowdrops, squills, and pasqueflowers. The Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation of the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) is urging citizens not to purchase these flowers, as most are listed in Ukraine's Red Book of endangered species. This operation is part of broader efforts to protect the country's natural heritage, which faces heightened threats during wartime.

Pavlo Ivanov, Director of the KCSA's Environmental Protection Department, emphasized that in wartime, as the nation's nature suffers colossal losses, the personal responsibility of every individual becomes critically important for preserving biodiversity.

Violations involving Red Book plants, including illegal trade, carry fines ranging from 1,700 to 3,655 hryvnias, with confiscation. Additionally, compensation for damages is required for each illegally picked or sold specimen.

Protected Species Requiring Conservation

The species under protection include:

  • Heuffel's crocus
  • Spring adonis
  • Common hepatica
  • Spring snowflake
  • Two-leaved squill
  • Lily of the valley
  • Pasqueflower
  • Common snowdrop
  • Snake's head fritillary
  • Wild garlic (ramsons)
  • Wild tulips
  • Common lungwort
  • Anemone
  • Hollowroot
  • Dense-flowered fumitory
  • Sweet violet

In a related move, the Kyiv region has officially designated two new botanical monuments of nature and a local landscape reserve. The new sites are named Orchids of Olshanytsia, Sribna Balka, and Bobyrivska Hreblya Dam. Furthermore, a garden using the method of Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki has been planted in Kyiv's Partisan Glory Park, highlighting ongoing efforts to restore the capital's natural environment.

Protecting early-blooming plants is a vital component of preserving Ukraine's biodiversity, especially as the ecological situation grows increasingly critical during the war. The 'Spring Blossom' operation not only aids in conserving rare species but also raises public awareness about the importance of nature conservation. These new botanical monuments and green zone restoration initiatives demonstrate active efforts to improve the ecological state of the Kyiv region.
