Court Delivers Verdict in Assault on Serviceman in Kyiv

According to Главком: A 33-year-old local resident has been sentenced to seven years in prison for assaulting a soldier undergoing rehabilitation in Kyiv. The attacker beat the victim and stole his belongings, including a bag containing money, documents, sneakers, and a cap. The court convicted him of robbery combined with violence, committed repeatedly under martial law. The incident took place in March 2025, when the 36-year-old serviceman, who had been wounded, was recovering in the capital.

The assailant struck the defender in the face with his fist before carrying out the theft. The suspect was apprehended under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Notably, the perpetrator had a prior criminal record, with previous convictions for hooliganism and robbery.

Additional Robberies Targeting Defenders

Beyond this case, Kyiv has seen other robberies targeting servicemen. For example, in December 2025, a 42-year-old man robbed a 22-year-old soldier in the Podilskyi district, stealing his mobile phone while he was walking his dog on the European Union Avenue. Another incident involved a veteran of the Ukrainian Armed Forces who uses a prosthetic limb, also occurring on the same avenue.

These incidents highlight a growing problem of attacks on military personnel and veterans, who, despite their status as defenders, have become victims of crime in the capital. Authorities are calling for enhanced security measures for those who have served the country and for steps to prevent such crimes in the future. The situation underscores the need for greater attention to the safety of soldiers and veterans, especially as they face challenges reintegrating after service. It also emphasizes the importance of social support and protecting the rights of those who risked their lives to defend the state.

In light of the increasing incidents of violence against military personnel in Kyiv, it's essential to examine the broader context of such crimes. A recent case involved a 6.5-year sentence for a street robbery targeting a woman, highlighting a troubling trend of assaults in the city. These events raise concerns about public safety and the need for protective measures for both soldiers and civilians.
