As of the end of December 2022, there are 2.3 million citizens of Ukraine residing in Poland, more than 950,000 of whom are refugees. This data is demonstrated by the PESEL database - Polish identification codes provided to Poles and citizens of other countries.

Overall, in December, the number of refugees from Ukraine in Poland was 400,000 less than in the summer of 2022, said Bartosz Marchuk, deputy chairman of the Polish Development Fund (PFR), on Twitter.

According to him, over 90% of Ukrainian refugees in Poland are women and children. Their number currently constitutes 2.5% of Poland's population, with the highest number of Ukrainian refugees residing in Lower Silesian (Wrocław) and Masovian (Warsaw) voivodeships. Ukrainians are actively seeking work, integrating into the life of the country, and their presence in Poland has significantly more advantages than disadvantages.

320,000 out of 450,000 able-bodied Ukrainian refugees are already employed in Poland - this is about 70% of the total number. Moreover, while in 2022 the balance of expenses and income for Poland from Ukrainians was negative - minus 1.45 billion zlotys (approximately $330 million), in 2023 it is anticipated that this balance will be positive - plus 1.1 billion zlotys ($250 million).

'It can be estimated that in 2022 alone, from taxes and social contributions, around 4 billion zlotys ($900 million) was collected in the budget, and in 2023 around 6 billion zlotys (more than $1.3 billion) will arrive' - noted Marchuk.

Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, more than 6.8 million people have left Ukraine. European countries are providing our citizens with temporary shelter and payments that can help while they await the return home or find sources of income in their new country.
