Hungary Lifts Two-Year Block on EU Fund Payments to Ukraine
Hungary Shifts Stance on Ukraine Aid Fund
According to Главком: Hungary’s new government, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, has ended a two-year blockade of payments from the European Peace Facility (EPF) intended to support Ukraine. The previous administration under Viktor Orbán had maintained the freeze. Budapest no longer objects to using the fund mechanism to compensate EU member states for weapons they have delivered to Ukraine. The policy change was announced during a meeting of the EU’s Political and Security Committee, and multiple European diplomats have confirmed the development.
The European Peace Facility reimburses member states for roughly 40% of the value of military aid provided to Ukraine. Currently, the EU has accumulated unpaid compensation totaling over €40 billion. Following the removal of Hungary’s veto, approximately €6.6 billion could be quickly unlocked. As one diplomat noted,
“Now they will finally receive some reimbursement, which will also make the burden-sharing more equitable.”
Outlook for Cooperation
Additionally, Budapest is prepared to lift its objection to opening the first negotiation cluster for Ukraine’s EU accession, following consultations regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia. Ukraine has urged its partners to allocate some resources toward acquiring Patriot systems and missiles, underscoring the importance of international support during this critical period.
This shift in Hungary’s position on backing Ukraine could mark a significant step in strengthening cooperation among EU countries in the realm of military assistance. It also opens the door for deeper Ukrainian integration into European structures, potentially influencing future accession talks. Given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, such support from the EU is vital for regional stability.
As Hungary reconsiders its stance on supporting Ukraine, the upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Magyar and President Zelenskyy could further clarify the conditions for cooperation. This dialogue may address vital issues, including the rights of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine, which are crucial for enhancing bilateral relations.
